IN DETAIL

ROKiT Venturi Racing concluded its Season 7 campaign in dramatic style as Norman Nato stormed to a dominant maiden victory in the FIA Formula E World Championship.

Competing on the clockwise version of the Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit – and with Drivers’ title prospects – a calculated, focussed and refined approach was the order for the day.

In qualifying, Edoardo Mortara – who entered the finale in P2 in the standings – secured P11 on the grid from Group 1 while Norman took P6 after advancing to the Super Pole shootout.

An accident for Edo overshadowed the start of the season finale when, on the opening lap, the Swiss-Italian struck the rear of Jaguar’s Mitch Evans who stalled from P3 on the grid.

Conscious and talking, Edo got out of his car unaided and in line with FIA safety regulations, was taken to hospital for precautionary assessments where it emerged that he sustained a microfracture of his fourth vertebrae for which he does not need surgery.

Following this red-flag period, the race was resumed behind the Safety Car and with Norman sitting in P4, the Frenchman was in a prime position to challenge for the podium.

With 33-minutes + 1 lap remaining, Norman rolled the strategy dice and by activating Attack Mode, commenced a major overtaking offensive in pursuit of silverware.

By passing Alexander Sims, Oliver Rowland and Stoffel Vandoorne, the 29-year-old moved into the lead and remained at the head of the field in a clinical rookie performance.

Establishing a 2.270-second lead, Norman took the chequered flag to secure his maiden Formula E victory and first single-seater win since 2017.

Despite failing to finish, Edo secured P2 in the Drivers’ World Championship, falling only seven points adrift of winner Nyck de Vries.

With an extra haul of 25 points, ROKiT Venturi Racing secured P7 in the Teams’ Standings, completing its most successful season on record with a final haul of 146 points.

MERCEDES-EQ’S NYCK DE VRIES WINS 2020/21 ABB FIA FORMULA E WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN DRAMATIC SEASON FINALE AT TEMPELHOF

“2021 BMW I BERLIN E-PRIX PRESENTED BY CBMM NIOBIUM (RD15)”

FAST FACTS
Mercedes-EQ’s Nyck de Vries won the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship title at the 2021 BMW i Berlin E-Prix presented by CBMM Niobium in dramatic circumstances as four of his title contenders failed to finish. ROKiT Venturi Racing’s Edoardo Mortara finished second in the Drivers’ standings with Jake Dennis from BMW i Andretti Motorsport in third.
Mercedes-EQ won the Teams Championship with 183 points, followed by Jaguar Racing and DS TECHEETAH rounding up the top three in the standings.
The E-Prix itself was won by ROKiT Venturi Racing’s Norman Nato but drama at the beginning of the race – and the subsequent championship victory for de Vries – dominated proceedings.
Jaguar Racing’s Mitch Evans failed to move from his starting slot, with ROKiT Venturi Racing’s Edoardo Mortara crashing into the back of the Kiwi to force an instant red flag and delay the start of the race.
Both drivers walked from their vehicles with Mortara taken to hospital for precautionary further assessment. The competition for the title was subsequently thrown wide open – as Mortara had begun the race in second place in the standings, with Evans in fourth.
The drama did not end there as BMW i Andretti Motorsport’s Jake Dennis – who began the race in third place in the standings – quickly suffered technical issues, later claiming battery failure while lifting to save energy.
A full course yellow flag was called for as the British driver emerged from his car – evidently furious at his mistake as he threw his race gear to the ground and fell to his knees in disbelief.
It meant that three of the top four going into the Sunday finale were forced out within the first five minutes – and the championship was now de Vries’ to lose.
At the front of the grid, de Vries’ Mercedes-EQ teammate Stoffel Vandoorne – who began the race in P1 having secured the Julius Baer Pole Position – tussled it out with Nato and Nissan e.dams’ Oliver Rowland.
Nato made use of Vandoorne’s slowing pace to take the race lead at the half-way point – with Mahindra Racing’s Alexander Sims in second place having made good use of his ATTACK MODE power boost.
Rowland made smart use of his own power boost – which returned to the usual two four-minute bursts for the Sunday race – to overtake his British compatriot and take second position.
There was further drama as the fourth of de Vries’ title challengers – reigning champion Antonio Felix da Costa of DS TECHEETAH – was forced into the wall while trying to overtake Saturday’s race winner Lucas di Grassi of Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler. The move caused another full course yellow and a penalty for di Grassi.
Amongst all the drama de Vries had snuck into fourth position, taking advantage of the overtaking capabilities at the Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit.
As the cars emerged from the safety car de Vries narrowly avoided a collision with teammate Vandoorne when the two Mercedes-EQ cars were caught either side of TAG Heuer Porsche’s Andre Lotterer.
And there was no looking back from there as de Vries held on to finish eighth and subsequently become Formula E’s first World Champion – with Nato holding off the challenge from second-placed Rowland and third-placed Vandoorne to win Round 15 itself.
Following Nato’s maiden victory, ROKiT Venturi Racing’s Team Principle Susie Wolff collected the team’s second trophy of the season.

ROKiT Venturi Racing edges closer to World Championship crown with Berlin podium

ROKiT Venturi Racing
Championship // P8 [121 points]

IN DETAIL

ROKiT Venturi Racing advanced its World Championship title prospects further in Berlin as Edoardo Mortara made a return to the Formula E podium for the fourth time this season.

Racing in the German capital, Monaco’s only racing team showed promising pace in the run-up to the penultimate round of Season 7 and capitalised upon every opportunity to score a total haul of 30 points and narrowly miss out on a double podium.

In qualifying from Groups 2 and 4, Edo and team-mate Norman Nato both progressed to the Super Pole shootout and secured P4 and P5 on the grid for the 45-minute + 1 lap affair.

With a clean getaway, both held position over the opening stages but began to fight forward after strategically deploying Attack Mode with 22-minutes + 1 lap remaining.

The 35kW power advantage proved to be crucial, and by clearing both DS TECHEETAH and both Audi drivers, the pair moved to the front, running in formation in P1 and P2.

Running on the alternate overcut strategy, Lucas di Grassi capitalised upon his power advantage, however, first overtaking Norman and then Edo to demote the pair to P2 and P3.

Nevertheless, Edo remained within range of the Season 2 champion to launch one last offensive on the final lap, falling only 0.141-seconds shy at the wave of the chequered flag to take P2.

Behind, Norman secured his best finish of the season to date by taking P4, narrowly missing out on his maiden podium by only 0.090s after a late-race battle with Jaguar’s Mitch Evans.

By extending his points tally to 92, Edo now sits in P2 in the Drivers’ Championship, three points behind leader Nyck de Vries with only one race remaining.

ABB FIA Formula E World Championship heads for dramatic Berlin finale

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship prepares for a dramatic double-header finale in Berlin with both the Drivers’ and Teams’ Championships set to go down to the final race of the season.

Ahead of this weekend’s 2021 BMW i Berlin E-Prix presented by CBMM Niobium, Mercedes-EQ’s Nyck de Vries currently holds a six-point lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship after a double podium in the previous rounds in London. In second place is Envision Virgin Racing’s Robin Frijns, while Sam Bird of Jaguar Racing rounds off the top three. The top six drivers are separated by just 17 points in what is set to be an incredibly tight finish to the series’ first FIA World Championship season.
Envision Virgin Racing lead the Teams’ Championship by seven points ahead of Mercedes-EQ  after showing strong consistency throughout the season. Jaguar Racing are just two points behind Mercedes-EQ, while the champion of the last two years DS TECHEETAH are following closely and will be looking to repeat last year’s success in Berlin.
The Net Zero Carbon Championship returns to Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit, the location which featured a remarkable six races in nine days for the most intense season finale in motorsport history last year.
The 2.4km custom-built track has hosted Formula E racing every year since the series’ inception in 2014, the one exception being in 2016 with the track moving to downtown Berlin. There will be two different configurations used over the weekend with Saturday’s race using the traditional anti-clockwise direction and Sunday switching to clockwise.
There will be a welcome return for fans as the E-Prix with more than 10,000 General Admission grandstand seats having been made available for the first time since the start of the global pandemic.

THE SEASON 7 SHOWDOWN: 2021 BERLIN E-PRIX PREVIEW

ROKiT Venturi Racing gears up for the Season 7 Formula E finale

THE CIRCUIT

Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit
Length // 2.355-kilometres
Corners // 10
Best Finish // P5 [Nick Heidfeld, 2015]

READY FOR TAKEOFF

The Berlin E-Prix has been present on the Formula E calendar since 2015, and this weekend, we return to the German capital to take to the track for one final time this season.

Taking place on the apron of Tempelhof Airport, the iconic venue will once again host history this weekend as it acts as the backdrop to Formula E’s season finale for a second successive year.

In 2020, the circuit hosted the most intense season finale in the history of motorsport by holding an unprecedented six races in nine days, but this year, the first chapter of Formula E’s World Championship legacy will come to a conclusion.

Naturally, such a significant moment requires an equally large challenge and for the first time in the series’ history, a double-header will be run on two different circuit configurations.

On Saturday, we will use Tempelhof’s traditional anti-clockwise layout but on Sunday, we will run the configuration in reverse, making the weekend twice as difficult as usual.

With 86 points covering the top 10 teams, and with 96 points still available, everything is still to play for and as such, all eyes are on the prize in the face of total unpredictability.
