The Report
Maserati MSG Racing secured a top 10 finish in the second leg of the double-header 2024 Shanghai E-Prix, with the team bouncing back from a difficult first race to score four points in China.
After losing a provisional ninth place finish in Race One, the team regrouped for Sunday and showcased renewed pace in a promising FP3 which saw Maximilian Günther set the fourth-fastest time.
For Qualifying, Max and his team-mate, Jehan Daruvala, completed their initial runs in Group A but despite displaying clear pace, missed out on the duels in one of the closest sessions of Season 10 so far.
With a 1:14.672 lap, Max missed out on the head-to-head stage by only 0.018 seconds to start 10th while Jehan, who was a mere 0.120 seconds shy of Max, qualified 16th.
Facing another peloton-style race ahead, energy saving was a top priority for the duo and when the race got underway, both set out to establish a consistent saving rhythm.
While Max held position on lap one, Jehan slipped to 18th but quickly recovered his lost ground by overtaking Sergio Sette Camara and Sacha Fenestraz on laps three and five.
Ahead, Max strategically fell out of the top 10 to build an energy advantage and pressed forward to eighth place before taking his first of two Attack Modes, rejoining in ninth.
On lap five, the 26-year-old overtook Jean-Eric Vergne to reclaim eighth in the first part of what would be a race-long battle with the DS Penske driver.
After pushing forward to overtake Mitch Evans for seventh, Max took his second Attack Mode on lap eight and continued to battle with Vergne when he rejoined the circuit and exchanged positions with the Frenchman for the next 12 laps.
Unfortunately, Vergne cleared Max on lap 20 and while Max remained a consistent threat, he was unable to regain the position and took a hard-fought eighth at the chequered flag. Jehan, meanwhile, finished 17th after losing time in an incident ahead.
Season 10 of the FIA Formula E World Championship will resume on June 29-30 for the 2024 Portland E-Prix – the penultimate race weekend of the current campaign.

The Report
Maserati MSG Racing experienced a challenging opening race at the 2024 Shanghai E-Prix as the FIA Formula E World Championship returned to mainland China for the first time since Season 2.
The Monaco-based team entered the weekend after showing promise in Berlin, but struggled for pace across practice as drivers, Maximilian Günther and Jehan Daruvala, got acquainted with the fast and flowing Shanghai International Circuit.
For Qualifying, both Max and Jehan launched their efforts from Group A, but despite taking a clear step forward, unfortunately missed out on the duels, lining up 14th and 20th on the grid.
Facing an energy sensitive race ahead, the duo adopted a critical energy saving strategy off the line and while Jehan fell to 22nd on lap one, Max slipped to 18th after taking both of his Attack Modes early on laps four and eight.
By building an energy advantage over their closest competitors, Max and Jehan set out to fight forwards, and while Jehan rose to 19th, Max staged a strong recovery drive into the top 10.
On lap 16 of 29, the 26-year-old German launched his offensive, and in a high-intensity battle with Jean-Eric Vergne and Oliver Rowland, fought forward to run as high as seventh.
Unfortunately, Max lost crucial places in the closing stages and after taking the chequered flag in ninth, received a 10-second penalty post-race following earlier contact and was classified 21st. Jehan, meanwhile, finished 19th.
In Their Words
Maximilian Günther, Driver, Maserati MSG Racing
“Starting from 14th, the goal was to save some energy, build an energy advantage, and then drive into the points which is what we achieved before the penalty. In the end, it was a pretty wild race with a lot of fighting, but it was unfortunate that we couldn’t gain more places because we were in a good place with energy, but overtaking wasn’t easy. We need to review the race, but before the penalty, I think we can be pleased with out recovery. Our pace over one lap is looking good, and if we can execute a strong Qualifying, I think we can be in a good position tomorrow.”
Jehan Daruvala, Driver, Maserati MSG Racing
“Today’s race wasn’t easy. Because of the energy sensitivity of the circuit, energy saving was the most important factor, but because our targets per lap were so high, it was very difficult to overtake. I think there is a lot we can learn from today, and if we can start higher, tomorrow has the potential to be a better day.”
Cyril Blais, Deputy Team Principal, Maserati MSG Racing
“A very exciting race here in Shanghai but unfortunately, it didn’t go our way. We went on an energy saving strategy at the start, and both drivers did well. Before the penalty, we were set for a points finish with Max, but I think there is more on the table. With Jehan, the race was a bit more complicated, but he has good pace, and across the team, we’re feeling confident. We have another race tomorrow, and with some analysis tonight, we can deliver more.”
Giovanni Sgro, Head of Maserati Corse
“We knew this circuit would have been a blank page for everyone, and racing can be disappointing sometimes. Max managed to finish P9 but unfortunately the penalty forced him to P21. Jehan struggled a bit more during the race, but he still climbed a few places to bring the car home on a challenging circuit. I’m confident both drivers will push hard to improve their performance tomorrow. There is still a solid chance to gain valuable points. The Shanghai International Circuit is a very famous one and it is always nice to see how Formula E fans have grown around the world. The series is back in China after four seasons and we are happy to spread our electrification message with our 100% electric Folgore range through Maserati’s participation in Formula E.”

2024 Shanghai E-Prix Preview
Maserati MSG Racing looks ahead to Formula E’s return to China

“The Shanghai International Circuit has been around for 20 years, but like most drivers on the grid, this will be my first time racing there. The layout is flowing nicely and will surely provide some spectacular racing. I’m very excited to get back behind the wheel and try to execute a strong weekend. The last races were chaotic and unfortunate, but I’m feeling really good about our form. Looking back at our season so far, we’ve won one race, been on the podium twice, and have been inside the top 10 consistently, so I’m confident that we can fight at the front in China. After Shanghai, we have a short break in the season, so I’ll be giving it my all before the final few races.”Jehan Daruvala, Driver, Maserati MSG Racing
“I’m really excited to race again this weekend, especially after my best result of the season in Berlin. Since joining the team, this season has been devoted to learning the nuances of Formula E, and step-by-step, I’m becoming more comfortable in the car, and I think that this is reflected in my results. Since my first top 10 of the season at Misano, I’ve been a consistent threat for points, and although the races haven’t always gone my way, I’m quite content with my progress. In Shanghai I want to maintain my form and hopefully, I can build some momentum and consistency as we approach the final few races of the year.”Cyril Blais, Deputy Team Principal, Maserati MSG Racing
“Formula E’s first-ever race was held on the streets of Beijing back in 2014, and after most recently racing in China in Season 5, we’re all looking forward to bringing the series back to its roots this weekend. In Berlin, Max and Jehan showed incredible pace and potential and we’re heading to Shanghai in a strong position. Throughout this season, we’ve showcased the performance of our package at almost every opportunity and knowing that we can be competitive wherever we race is an immense source of confidence and motivation. We’ve had an intense run of races recently, and Shanghai is the last race before a short gap in the calendar ahead of Portland and London. Very soon, we’ll be able to take some time to rest up before the final push but right now, we need to give it everything we can and focus on the task at hand.”Giovanni Sgro, Head of Maserati Corse
“Formula E returns to China after four seasons and even though we only joined the series last year, it is always nice to come back to old fans and race on a new track. The Shanghai International Circuit is a very special and famous location for motorsport and it will an opportunity for a new challenge: the circuit is an exciting mix of technical aspects and tight/fast corners; it will be interesting to see how the cars and drivers will perform and which strategy will be the best to succeed. After Berlin we are looking forward to another double-header, hoping to improve our last results and to be consistent with both our drivers throughout the weekend. The Shanghai E-Prix will also be a great opportunity to promote the link between the 100% electric series and the Maserati Folgore range, in a country where innovation and technological research are already part of modern culture.”

「YOU ARE STAR」

Maserati MSG Racing executed a strong in-season Rookie Test at the Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit in Berlin, Germany, to gather vital data insights ahead of the final three race weekends of the FIA Formula E World Championship’s 10th season.
The test, which is reserved exclusively for drivers who have not competed in Formula E, is the only one of its kind during the season and represents a key opportunity for teams to complete additional on-track running outside of race weekend and FP0 sessions.
Joined by returning tester and 2022 FIA Formula 2 champion, Felipe Drugovich, and Stellantis Motorsport Young Driver, Nico Pino, Maserati MSG Racing completed an invaluable amount of running across six hours of available track time.
While showing clear pace, with Felipe posting the second-fastest lap of the morning, the pair completed a combined total of 197 laps – 461.9 kilometres of running.
“Today was very productive. We completed our whole program, we learned a lot, and Felipe and Nico followed the plan as intended, did a great job, and made no mistakes, so overall, it was a positive day. We have plenty of data to analyse from today in the coming days and our learnings should be beneficial to our performance for the rest of the season.”
“It was good to be back in Berlin with Maserati MSG Racing. I enjoyed getting back up to speed in the Formula E car after nearly a year of not driving it. We got through the whole program, gathered some good data, I learned a lot, and overall, I’m very happy with the day.”Nico Pino
“Today was my first time in the Maserati Tipo Folgore, and overall, it was a very productive day. The Gen3 Formula E car is different to anything I’ve experienced – it behaves differently to any other type of racing car. We completed our program, and there is a lot of data to review but I hope today’s test helps to shape the team’s performance in the future.”

Maserati MSG Racing returned to the top 10 in the second part of the double-header 2024 Berlin E-Prix, with driver, Jehan Daruvala, finishing seventh to score his best result in Formula E.
Jehan, who is the only full-time rookie on the grid in Season 10, came close to scoring his second points finish of the current campaign on Saturday in Germany but unfortunately missed out after a late incident.
With evident pace, however, the 25-year-old entered Sunday with high hopes and after setting the fourth-fastest time in FP3, was unfortunate to miss out on the duels in Qualifying.
While Jehan secured 13th on the grid, team-mate, Maximilian Günther, rallied his efforts and advanced to the head-to-head stages, from where he qualified fifth.
A loss of power at the start of the race, however, cost Max vital ground and while the 26-year-old slipped to 10th, Jehan ascended to 11th with an opportunistic performance on the first lap.
After settling into a consistent energy saving rhythm, Max started to rise through the top 10 and activated Attack Mode on laps six and nine to place himself in a prime strategic position.
Despite losing positions upon activation, the German driver swiftly battled back into the points by gaining six positions in one lap but picked up front wing damage shortly after.
In an incident similar to his race-ending accident on Saturday, Max’s front wing broke off, slid under his car, and removed his ability to steer, causing him to hit the barriers and retire from the race.
Max’s retirement caused a Safety Car on lap 11 and after a brief neutralisation, action was resumed at the end of lap 14, with Jehan on the verge of the top 10 and eyeing points.
After holding position initially, the Indian pounced on lap 21 by overtaking Stoffel Vanndoorne and slotted into the points when Norman Nato and Sacha Fenestraz came to blows ahead – an accident which caused a second Safety Car.
In the second restart at the end of lap 28, Jehan resumed his assault and overtook Jean-Eric Vergne and Jake Hughes on laps 36 and 37 before passing Taylor Barnard in the final corner on the final lap to claim seventh.
Season 10 of the FIA Formula E World Championship will resume on May 25-26, 2024, for the inaugural Shanghai E-Prix – the series’ first race in China since Season 5.
“Obviously, a very painful race. I think in general, the quality and the pace we’ve had this weekend has been great. In all of the sessions – apart from the races – we were in the top five. In the race I unfortunately lost drive several times in the first two or three laps, and this made me lose several places. After this, we decided to use a new strategy by saving energy, falling back a bit to get an energy advantage and then move forward. This is what we did, we had a bit more energy than most of the cars around us, and then we started to move forward and were on our way to the front. Things were going well, I was feeling good in the car, and then in Turn Two while I was looking in my mirror, there was a concertina effect and I went into one of the Andretti cars. I wasn’t able to avoid it, and that was the end of our race.”Jehan Daruvala, Driver, Maserati MSG Racing
“I’m very happy to achieve my best result of the season so far. Overall, we’ve shown a lot of progress this weekend and I feel like I’m taking good steps forward. In the end, we were rewarded for our hard work with seventh which we can be happy about. I’m looking forward to continuing the season in Shanghai with this momentum and hopefully, we can score even more points in China.”
“Another race of two halves. Obviously, a very disappointing weekend for Max, starting inside the top five after a very strong Qualifying in both races, but ultimately we didn’t manage to convert that into points. It’s frustrating, because we know that the pace is there, but we’ll regroup, and we’ll try again in Shanghai. For Jehan, we’re very satisfied. He drove a strong, consistent race from 13th and moved up the field when he had to and made a good move in the last corner on the final lap to take seventh. He scored some good points today, his pace is getting better, and so is his consistency. I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in the final six races of this season.”Giovanni Sgro, Head of Maserati Corse
“This weekend wasn’t easy for us. Max was hoping for a strong result in his home race but unfortunately he had to retire in both races because of accidents; nevertheless he performed well throughout the weekend. We would have liked to celebrate like we did last year here in Berlin but we also know sometimes racing can be unpredictable. This doubleheader marks the halfway of an intense season 10 and we are happy Jehan is improving race by race giving his strong contribution to the team; this weekend he managed to stay away from troubles despite the very challenging time on track and he brought home new points finishing P7. Now it’s time to look forward and focus on Shanghai in two weeks.”
